This Is Us Season 4: Everything Fans Need To Know

The Season 3 finale of This Is Us answered a few questions that fans had been asking for weeks, but the flash-forward scene left viewers with a ton of new questions that they will have to wait months – if not years – to find out the answers to. Not surprisingly, the finale was a tearjerker, but it was a bit of a shock that the focus shifted to the Pearson family matriarch, Rebecca (Mandy Moore). Does this mean she will be an even bigger part of Season 4?

Fans found out that Randall (Sterling K. Brown) and Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson) make it through the rough patches in their marriage and actually go the distance, while Kevin (Justin Hartley) and Zoe (Melanie Liburd) ended their relationship because of their differing family goals.

These two reveals wrapped major storylines from Season 3, but the flash-forward scene is what really stole the show. Not only does it appear that Rebecca may have Alzheimer’s or dementia, but her brother-in-law Nicky (Griffin Dunne) is by her side, Kevin has a son, Toby (Chris Sullivan) shows up by himself without a wedding ring, and Kate (Chrissy Metz) and Miguel (Jon Huertas) are nowhere to be found.

When the show returns this September, creator Dan Fogelman says that he already has the entire season planned out, and it has been that way since day one. He explained that when your a making a TV show, you never know if it will get picked up, much less if it has any longevity, so he delivered the pilot script and pitched the first four seasons.

“Fans are going to like the way some things go, they’re going to have questions, and not like the way other things go,” said Fogelman.

Season 4 will also put the spotlight on Rebecca after three seasons of everything being all about her husband Jack (Milo Ventimiglia). Moore says that the show will dive into Rebecca’s early widowed years.

“I think it’s a big pull. I think in other aspects of her life especially immediately post-Jack, the kids have just graduated from high school and potentially going off to college. It’s a big lonely road that she is sort of staring down the barrel of, but she always comes out on top,” says Moore.

Fogelman and NBC have planned a six-season run for This Is Us, so fans are now halfway through the story of the Pearson family. He says that the fourth season is a midpoint, but there is still a lot more coming.
